"We were actually looking for a mobile laser-based system to record the state of road surfaces. Then we ran into Horus at a trade fair, and we were surprised by the speed and image quality of the Horus mobile mapping systems. It was quite a difference compared to the video-based systems we’d seen up to that point", says Remco Hermsen of Gelderland province. When the province commissioned a tender for the EU award procedure, Horus was awarded the mobile mapping of all provincial roads in the Netherlands.

 

The other half of the tender, assessment of the images, was awarded to several engineering companies specialized in road construction. These companies were supplied with the powerful Horus Mobile Mapping Suite to assess the images that are recorded by the mobile mapping system. Both the provinces and the engineering companies are quite content with the data and software supplied by Horus.

When asked about the advantages, Hermsen replies: “provincial roads are often busy two-lane roads, we can’t just close a road for inspections. That would cause a lot of annoyance amongst drivers. But performing inspections on open roads is no option, firstly because of the safety of our inspectors, and secondly because of the quality of the inspections. You simply miss a lot of detail. The Horus Mobile Mapping suite allows us to inspect roads on any suitable moment, without interfering with traffic”. The camera system on the mobile recorder captures perfect pictures with an astounding level of detail at highway speeds (130 km/h/81 mph).


The Horus recorder captures images and GPS data in accordance with the CROW 146b guideline for visual road inspections. “What we are looking for are cracks and coarse road surfaces. We thought we needed a detector based system, but the image quality of the Horus system allows the engineers to do the same, plus they can use their expertise during the assessment. Something a detector-based system cannot. In addition, the images are 360-degree HD, which allows us to assess roadside assets too, like map posts, traffic signs, guard rails, etcetera.”

But it’s not just the images or the productivity (up to 360 kilometers or 225 miles a day) of the mobile recorder that makes the Horus Mobile Mapping suite stand out. The recorder is capable of capturing a whole lot more than images and GPS data. A multitude of sensors can be added to the recorder, allowing you to visualize the data you need.

It is the Mobile Mapping software that brings life to the recordings, allowing you to measure, annotate and extract data from the footage. The information you need is never more than a mouse click away. The true power, however, is the possibility to combine GIS and CAD data with the images. Static data comes alive when combined with the images: are roadside assets where they are supposed to be, are bridges and overpasses still intact, is anything missing?
